BBC Radio 4 has announced that the weekly Midweek programme will come to an end next March.
The changes to the schedule will see the introduction of two new arts programmes, one of which will give theatre centre stage. Midweek presenter Libby Purves will host the dedicated show which is set to “explore the vitality of theatre all around the UK” and bring stories and developments to listeners.
“It is certainly important that Radio 4 should cover more fully the remarkable variety and adventurousness of British theatre at all levels around the country, and I am glad to be a part of its move towards this,” said Libby Purves.
Another new programme will feature half-hour interviews between leading artists, including writers and musicians, as processes and creative decisions are explored in depth. Each of the interviews will have a specific purpose or enquiry. Most of the interviewees will become the interviewer in the following edition. A similar programme featuring comedians, Chain Reaction, is in its eleventh series on Radio 4.
Four series of six episodes have been commissioned and will take up the former Midweek slot on Wednesday mornings at 9am. The slot will be shared with other arts and factual programmes.
The new schedule sees Midweek broadcast for the final time next March. The programme launched in 1982 and has been presented by Libby Purves for 33 years.
“Midweek, presented by the formidable broadcaster, Libby Purves, has provided countless memorable moments over many years,” said Radio 4’s Controller Gwyneth Williams.
“I want to thank all the guests and excellent producers who have brought such a degree of surprise and pleasure to our Wednesday mornings. Most of all my thanks, both personal and on behalf of listeners to Libby, for the outstanding job she has done as presenter for so long.”
The new half-hour theatre show will broadcast once per month on Saturdays with a repeat during the week. Libby Purves is in discussions with the network about further presenting commitments.
