Summer soul music from Magic

A brand new pop-up digital radio station playing soul and motown music has been launched this week.

Magic Soul Summer will showcase songs from Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, The Isley Brothers and Luther Vandross. Other artists to be played on the new station include Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan. The pop-up DAB station is from the same team as Mellow Magic and Magic Chilled.

The station is drawing on experience and knowledge of Soul music from presenter Angie Greaves. Angie has interviewed many soul artists, such as Martha Reeves, The O’Jays and Lionel Richie, for her Saturday night soul music programme on Magic. Presenter Martin Collins will also feature on the station, having long been a part of the soul music scene. Martin has played at a number of soul events and hosted his own soul music radio shows.

During the summer the station will play “back to back classics from the purple period of Soul”, driven by Motown, Stax and Philadelphia soul through the 60s, 70s and 80s. Contemporary artists will also feature on the playlist.

The soul station replaces Magic ABBA which launched in May. Compared to traditional analogue radio it is much easier for broadcasters to launch special pop-up radio stations on digital radio.

Magic Soul Summer is available now on digital radio in London, Birmingham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear, Humberside, Leeds, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, Tayside and Inverness. It can also be found on the Magic Soul Summer website and in the Magic app.

It may be necessary to retune digital radios to find the new station.
