Coverage of this summer’s Olympic games in Rio will begin on BBC Radio 5 live on 6th August.
The news and sport station has unveiled its plans for Rio 2016 which extends to the 37 hosting venues over 17 days.
Some of the presenters and commentators reprise their roles from London 2012, with the presenting team lead by Eleanor Oldroyd, Mark Chapman, Mark Pougatch, Russell Fuller, Caroline Barker and former Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards.
They will be joined by a line-up of ex-Olympians including relay gold medallist Darren Campbell and two-time cycling gold medallist Victoria Pendleton. Britain’s most successful female swimmer of all time Karen Pickering will join Steve Parry and John Hunt at the aquatics stadium. Former Olympian Craig Heap will also bring his experience from five World and five European championships to the Gymnastics events.
They will be joined by well known commentator’s on 5 live, such as Mike Costello, Alison Mitchell, and Jonathan Agnew.
On 5th August Caroline Barker and John Murray will provide commentary on the Opening Ceremony in the Maracanã Stadium.
From 7th to 18th September the station, as well as BBC Radio 5 live sports extra, will bring listeners coverage of the 2016 Paralympics. More than 80 hours of live coverage will be led by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Jonathan Overend, Gigi Salmon, London 2012 gold medal-winning cyclist Mark Colbourne, and swimmer Graham Edmunds.
BBC Radio 5 live will have a 30-minute round-up every hour during its Olympic Breakfast between 6am and 9am. Coverage of each day’s action begins at 12pm UK time with Eleanor Oldroyd and Mark Chapman, followed by Mark Pougatch in the evening then Russell Fuller, Steve Parry and Jonathan Edwards through until 4am. Local time in Rio de Janeiro is four hours behind BST.
Sport fans can tune into the action on digital radio and radio apps, as well as the BBC Radio 5 live website and BBC Sport app. Highlights and insight will be added to the ‘In Short’ section of the 5 live website which hosts short clips from the station’s programmes.
