Bing Crosby to be celebrated on pop-up radio station

American singer and actor Bing Crosby will be celebrated for two weeks on a pop-up digital radio station.

Bing was born on 3rd May 1903 and made his first solo radio performance in 1931. During the 1930s he made a 15-minute weekly radio broadcast and from 1936 was MC of Kraft Music Hall on NBC for ten years. With almost one billion records, tapes, CDs and download sales to his name he could be the best selling recording artist of all time.

Angel Radio, the nostalgia radio station based in Hampshire, will be available on Pop Up Radio from Sunday, 1st May for a fortnight. The station will broadcast documentaries about the singer, his writers, films and some lesser known recordings.

Listeners will also be able to call the station with requests for favourite songs. The station, which is staffed by volunteers, is able to delve into its library of more than 100,000 recordings.

The areas which will be able to receive Angel Radio by selecting ‘Pop Up Radio’ on their DAB set are Ayrshire, Berkshire, North Hampshire, South Hampshire, Bristol, Cambridge, Cornwall, Coventry, Essex, Kent, Isle of Wight, Leicester, Norwich, Nottinghamshire, Peterborough, Plymouth, South East Wales, Sussex Coast, Swindon, West Sussex, West Wiltshire, and Wolverhampton.

Listeners not able to receive the station on their digital radio will also be able to listen at angelradio.co.uk.

Broadcasters are able to launch radio stations for special events with relative ease thanks to the flexibility of digital radio. The Pop Up Radio station normally carries an information loop between events, whilst the BBC’s recent country music and Eurovision stations pop-up in their own right.
